The Ultimate Pet Showdown

The Ultimate Pet Showdown

By: Daniel Vazquez

Cats and dogs are commonly known animals found in households across the country.  According to Forbes, “44.5% of U.S. households own dogs and 29% of households own cats” (2025). This means that 73.5% of households have either a cat or dog as a pet. They make loyal and supportive companions to not only adults but also to children as they can help encourage responsibility and provide emotional support to them. Beyond their loyalty and support, they’re also often considered a family members due to providing comfort in more ways. Despite all the benefits from owning a cat or dog, each of them has their own downsides. It’s essential for you to be aware of this, as cats and dogs have significantly different personalities, needs, and behaviors. Yet, the same question continues to arise and that is, “Which of the two animals do you prefer, a cat or a dog?” This question is one that is challenging to answer because many individuals are biased. People often use their own experiences to influence your decisions, rather than giving you considerations to help you decide for yourself. Considering those factors would give you a better understanding of which pet is best for you. That’s why I’m here, to give you the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. Which is, what animal you should consider having to become your next best friend.

Cats Vs. Dogs Personalities

Cats and dogs have visible personalities traits that are unique in their own expressed way. For instance, cats are more known for being independent when compared to a dog. They can entertain themselves in a quiet manner or enjoy just lounging around, instead of them needing someone to always interact with. I own a Domestic Shorthair cat named Milo, and he loves his cat tower. This is where he spends most of his days napping or scratching. This is great because I get to relax with Milo while enjoying his comforting company. With cats being independent you may want to give them attention and love. This could have negative effect because if you were to continue to bother your cat, it would most likely become stressed and irritated by you. They need their space for them to be relaxed and not overstimulated from its environment. Now, I’m not saying cats will never want attention as they can be in the mood of wanting to be around you and be pet like a dog. Despite wanting attention cats seek at least 20 to 30 minutes of it. This can help build positive bonds between you and your cat. This kind of personality is one that many introverts prefer and can handle as it can easily be adjusted to their lifestyle.

As for dogs, they are more appealing to extroverts. Dog’s personalities can range from extremely fearful, assertive, calm, aggressive, and energetic. As you can see, every dog is different however, most dogs are social and playful. They need that constant attention and entertainment. Whether that is from playing catch with them, going for a walk, or even just giving them positive reinforcement and encouragement. I not only own Milo, but I also own a Bernedoodle named Violet. She is my energetic pet and walking buddy, which is great for both of us. This is a daily activity that we both enjoy as she can burn off energy and I get to stay active. This is important for you to help meet their needs for their overall well-being. If you are unable to provide enough attention, training, and socialization, it will cause them to have behavioral issues. Ultimately, while cats and dogs share some traits, the ideal pet depends on whether you're seeking an independent companion or a dependent one.

Cats Vs. Dogs Behavior

Cats’ behavior looks very different throughout the day. In the daytime cats enjoy taking naps and they take pleasure in grooming you. By this I mean, if your cat starts to lick you, it is a sign of bonding and affection. They also enjoy being near you at most times. Whether that is from following you, sleeping near you, or playing gently by pawing at you. All these actions require little to no energy, yet it indicates that your cat is content and affectionate towards you. With all of the pent-up energy from the day it is exerted during the night. Cats are known to be mischievous animals. From this, they take satisfaction in destroying objects in the houses like vases, toilet paper, furniture, anything that they can get their paws on. If they are not misbehaving in your house, then they are zooming throughout your house imagining they are catching prey. This behavior can become a lot if you do not know how to control this type of behavior. It is crucial for you to accommodate your cat’s behavior during their nighttime chaos, as it will help their well-being.

As opposed to dogs’ behavior. Dogs have more energy during the day and that is simply because they were naturally born with active bodies and use that built up energy efficiently. They are always ready for that next adventure. From that, dogs’ behavior is mostly influenced by their environment, what they are being taught, and their own genes. These three factors will help determine what kind of behavior your dog will have. My dog is a Bernedoodle. This is a Bernese Mountain dog mixed with a poodle. Her genes play a role in her behavior as she is immensely affectionate. This is a result from her Bernese Mountain dogs genes as they are known to be gentle, loyal, and loving dogs. Now she is not only affectionate but notably intelligent. This is because of her poodle genes which allow her to be a quick learner and easily trainable. Although she is intelligent and affectionate she can misbehave. From her being highly affectionate she developed separation anxiety. This is common not only for my dog but many other breeds. If your dog grows a sense of attachment to you it can develop anxiety when left alone for extended periods of time. While my dog has separation anxiety, she is also vocal. Her intelligence allows her to understand when and if she needs attention, is bored, or needs any kind of interaction. She will become vocal and bark to alert you she needs your help. This kind of behavior can be stressful to you and those around you. That is why it is necessary for you to take the time to train your dog to help regulate those kinds of behaviors. If not regulated it will lead to destructive behavior, and these behaviors are common in many dogs. They could tug on items that are not toys, scratching, and even bite. For me when I do not let my dog burn off her energy, it can turn into aggression. It is clear that cats and dogs’ behavior can vary depending on the breed and communication styles. That is why you must consider which behavior you are willing and prepared to accommodate.

  1. Hi Daniel! I decided to take a look at your paper because I have always been curious to see a comparison between cats and dogs as they are the most common household pets. My close family all has dogs, and I have four dogs, so I am definitely biased towards favoriting dogs. Your comparison of the two animals was an interesting read, and I am definitely interested in looking deeper into this!

  2. I like this article. Cats vs dogs is a very common debate, and you give a good analysis of the benefits and drawbacks of both sides. I am curious, however, as to why cats are more expensive to keep than dogs. I figure it would be the other way around, because they are much smaller and more independent. Of course, I did not write the essay, so in the end you know more than I do...

Which Boba Shop in Kennewick is Worth Visiting?

Which Boba Shop in Kennewick is Worth Visiting? Background Information There are many boba shops throughout the Tri-Cities including Novel, Boba Bear, Pearl Tea, and Boba Lab. All of these options may be overwhelming and make it difficult to decide which one is going to be worth the trip. The only way to find out is to try and compare different shops and consider important factors such as price, quality of ingredients, customer service, and atmosphere. Although there are many options for boba shops in the Tri-Cities, I wanted to compare two specific ones within Kennewick. The two shops I want to take a closer look at are called Boba Lab and Boba Bear.  Both shops are fairly close to each other and located around the main streets and business centers in Kennewick, which is Clearwater and Columbia Center Boulevard.  The strategic location of these boba shops makes each of these shops accessible. Both of these boba shops were in strip malls which gives them a sense of community...

The Cost of the Death Penalty

The Cost of the Death Penalty Image by E.I.P.R          As Martin Luther King Jr. once stated, “Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.” These words spoked by Martin Luther King Jr., still resonate in today’s society. We have seen how violence can escalate with more violence rather than it being handled to reclaim justice. According to FBI, they note, “Based on reported data, show a violent crime occurred, on average, every 25.9 seconds in 2024. The breakdown shows on average a murder occurred every 31.1 minutes and a rape occurred every 4.1 minutes.” This suggests that as we go about our lives, we're often unaware of the crimes happening around us. Eventually those individuals that are committing these violent acts get caught and will have to face the consequences. Depending on the severity of the crime committed, it may lead to community service, life imprisonment, or even the death p...
