IPhone 2G Vs IPhone 17
iPhones have become the most popular
brand of phones. They are loved for their high-quality camera, strong security,
and reliability. Every year, a new iPhone is released, and iPhone users love
the unique updates that Apple creates to help the iPhone become quicker and
more efficient compared to its peers. We will review the pros and cons of the
first-ever generation, compared to the most recently released iPhone, the 17th
generation.
The first iPhone, known as the
iPhone 2G, was announced by Steve Jobs on January 9, 2007. Later on, it was released on June 29, 2007
(Xreart sales). According to Xreart sales, Apple released the first-generation
iPhones in a single color option: silver, aluminum, and black, with a plastic
back. Apple sold over one million iPhone 2Gs by September 8, 2007. When they were
first released, they did not sell out too quickly due to their high price,
carrier exclusivity, limited features, and limited supply. The first generation
of iPhones was a combination of an iPod and a mobile phone with data service. As
explained by Xreart sales, the cost of an iPhone 2 G, when it was newly
launched, was about $499-$599. It may sound cheap now compared to the current
models, but it was expensive at the time. Apple proposed including some of the
special features of the first-generation iPhone, such as a larger screen than
an iPod, sensors, visual voicemail, a web browser, finger touch gestures,
Bluetooth, and data service. These are critical features to a smartphone, and
the iPhone 2G competed effectively with existing touchscreen phones.
Iphone2G (1st generation)
Eventually, in early 2008, the
iPhone 2G 4GB was discontinued in the United States and sold out of the initial
supply. As explained by Tech It Out, the 8GB model was discontinued the same
year as the first-generation 4GB model. Now, it is very difficult to find any
model of the iPhone 2G. If you were to find an iPhone 2G, it would cost you
hundreds of thousands of dollars on any internet marketplace or auction. It can
also depend on their condition and the amount of battery usage. If you were to
purchase a first-generation iPhone on today's date, it would not support
cellular services, such as mobile data, texting, or making calls, because its
exclusive carrier, AT&T, closed down its 2G network in early 2016 in the
United States and worldwide. The outdated features or capabilities are due to
the impossibility of upgrading the iOS. A similar feature is present in all
iPhones, except for the iPhone 8 and later models. Therefore, if you purchase a
first-generation iPhone, you would have to treat it like an iPod and use it
with a nearby Wi-Fi connection. Usage will be for entertainment purposes,
rather than cellular services. You will be able to install a limited number of
apps due to its generation. Nonetheless, the iPhone 2G was highly effective at
the time of its release, and its relevance was similar to what the iPhone 17
has today.
IPhone 17 (17th Generation)
The newest editions of the iPhones are the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro
Max. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 were newly released on September 19,
2025 (Apple). According to Apple, the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 were
available for pre-order as early as September
12, 2025. Usually, Apple releases its new iPhone models at
this time. As indicated on the company’s website, the iPhone Pro is available in five colors:
Lavender, Sage, White, Black, and Mist Blue, and the iPhone Pro Max is
available in Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue. According to Apple, the
color black has been the most popular purchase so far. The least bought color
selection has been white. The wide ranges can always change due to the release
of newly updated iPhones. It is impossible to predict what the population will
prefer next.

Comparison Between the
iPhone 2G and the iPhone 17
Camera
In terms of
features, the iPhone 17 is highly advanced compared to the iPhone 2G. Starting
with the exterior, the iPhone
17 Pro Max features a square center front camera that allows for seamless
switching between landscape and portrait modes without requiring the iPhone to
be rotated (Lux). Lux explicitly highlights that the iPhone 17 features a 48MP
main camera and a wide-angle lens for capturing high-quality macro shots. The
iPhone 17 generation model was built with vibrant/vivid colors, enhanced
detail, and effortless zoom. These features are advanced to enable the iPhone
to compete effectively with its rivals, such as the Samsung S25. The iPhone 2 G
had a basic 2MP camera, which was of low quality, producing blurry images with
muted colors. I have not used the iPhone
2G, but I have used the iPhone 6. With the iPhone 6, you cannot access some
apps because they require iOS 16.0 or above, while the iPhone 6 has version 15.
The camera and storage are also different from those of the iPhone 17. iPhone
17 has better pixels and picture quality as compared to iPhone 2G and iPhone 6. Even though they differ in camera specs, both
are made for their time.
Storage
In contrast, the
iPhone 17 has much more storage space compared
to the iPhone 2G. The iPhone
2G had a minimal amount of storage due to its IOS
(Tech It Out). On the other hand, the iPhone 17 comes with 256 GB or 512GB
storage (Apple). With iPhone 2G, the iCloud storage capacity is very limited, while iPhone 17 has a very
good storage capacity. In other words, iPhone 17 does not need an iCloud
storage upgrade as compared to iPhone 6 and below. That is high-capacity
storage, which allows Apple users to have substantial storage that they love. Even
though they have different features, each side has attributes that are
preferred based on its time of prominence.
In
conclusion, Apple's new improvements and refinements are the reason why Apple users continue purchasing their new
technological phones every year. Apple users are delighted by the company's
capability to fulfill their needs and preferences. Each side has its merits that
warrant its purchase. For instance, even though the current market prefers the
iPhone 17, the iPhone 2G was also in high demand when it was released. Thus,
regardless of the time difference, both iPhones hold significance to the
customers and the company.
